The Knox-Galesburg Symphony opens the 2025-2026 season with a powerful tribute to American spirit and local legacy. Under the direction of Richard Cangro, this program features Lincoln Portrait by Aaron Copland, with actor Steven Duchrow portraying Carl Sandburg as narrator—a nod to Sandburg’s Grammy-winning 1960 performance. Also on the program are Copland’s stirring Fanfare for the Common Man, Barber’s deeply moving Adagio for Strings, and Gershwin’s vibrant An American in Paris. This unforgettable evening blends music, poetry, theater, and the enduring presence of Carl Sandburg in the heart of Galesburg.

A Celebration of Spirit

Orpheum Theatre
57 S Kellogg St, Galesburg, IL 61401

Knox-Galesburg Symphony
Wesley Anderson, conductor

A Celebration of Spirit brings together masterworks that highlight the vitality and diversity of the human experience. Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 is based on a play by Ibsen that tells the story of a young man’s journeys in search of family redemption. Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1 features excerpts from his well-known opera Carmen, in which the protagonist is a gypsy woman who experiences challenges and misfortune but whose humanity shines through the story. Finally, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite transports us into a world of wonder, tradition, and imagination, marking the seasonal shift with timeless melodies.

Knox-Galesburg Symphony

Rossana Cauti, conductor

Join us for a celebration of love through a truly unforgettable concert. Our dramatic opener for this concert, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, is based on Shakespeare’s  iconic romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 has been noted for its lush, romantic melodies that, at times, bear some resemblance to Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture, and this work led to Rachmaninoff being labeled by some as a worthy successor to Tchaikovsky among Russian composers. SIU Orchestra Director Rossana Cauti will direct the orchestra.
