The Knox-Galesburg Symphony, your orchestra, has been working hard over the past year to transition into our next generation of musical leadership. After Bruce Polay’s retirement, the KGS began preparing for a new Music Director. The position was opened last summer and we received more than fifty applications from around the world. A committee of musicians, community leaders, and board members was created to steer this process. From this pool of applicants, 10 semi finalists were selected.
In March 2018 we gathered on stage at The Orpheum Theatre to conduct Skype interviews of the semi-finalists. Each had talents and personality traits befitting of our orchestra. However, after much deliberation, the committee had to narrow this down to four finalists. These four finalists auditioned for the position by each programming, rehearsing, and conducting one of four masterworks concerts in our 2018/19 season.
"The Search” turned out to be a very exciting season. Each of our four Masterworks concerts was led by one of the finalists. They traveled to Galesburg to rehearse, meet members of the community and the board, attend events with donors and subscribers, and connect with area schools. The culmination of their week here was a Masterworks concert. Audience members were surveyed following each performance. Now in May 2019, we are almost ready to announce who has been selected to be the next Music Director of your orchestra, The Knox-Galesburg Symphony.
